About Us

Agencia Costarricense de Investigaciones Biomédicas (ACIB) is a research center in health and prevention of cancer, which began in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica in 1993 under the name Proyecto Epidemiológico Guanacaste (PEG). In a study of over 5,000 women about cervical cancer in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute of the United States (NCI). During these years the research activities of the PEG focused primarily on the causes and new ways to prevent cervical cancer and infection by human papillomavirus (HPV).

Subsequently, the PEG studied different types of cancer, such as the study of the relationship between stomach cancer and Helicobacter pylori infection and the study on breast cancer and the human microbiome. These studies have been parallel to the main study which is the study of cervical cancer and its relationship with the HPV virus.

Currently the ACIB has a group of researchers and highly trained personnel in conducting observational studies and clinical trials with human subjects following the highest ethical and quality standards established worldwide.

Today, without losing our goal to help improve the health of mankind, we are in the process of expansion and contribute to the health of more people.
